Chapter 5

AT HOME IN THE WORLD

The labour movement has always had an international dimension: the injustices and inequities that unrestrained capitalism visits on workers in one country typically have analogues abroad. And sometimes issues of social justice transcend economics. At the turn of the last century, two of the world’s greatest trade union leaders, Jim Larkin of Liverpool and James Connolly of Glasgow, were internationalists who found themselves fighting for liberty and social justice on the streets in Dublin and the shipyards of Belfast. In my years as a union leader, first with CUPE Ontario and later with the Ontario Federation of Labour, I often found myself making common cause with oppressed and disenfranchised peoples far outside Canada’s borders. I believe it is important for Canadian union leaders to look beyond our borders and help fight injustice and intolerance wherever in the world we find it.
